Electronics & Accessories: Importing From China to India

Electronics is the category most Indian importers start with and the one where a missing certification does the most damage. The factories are world-class; the paperwork is the part that catches people out.

China's electronics supply chain is the deepest in the world, from component markets to finished consumer devices, and almost everything an Indian online seller or retailer might stock in this category can be sourced at several price and quality tiers. That range is the opportunity and the risk: the same listing title can cover a certified, well-made product or an untested copy.

For importers into India, the defining feature of this category is regulation. Many electronic products need a Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) registration, and anything that transmits on radio frequency needs wireless approval, before it can legally be sold. Sort this out during sourcing, not at the port.

Where it is made

HubWhat to know
ShenzhenThe centre of consumer electronics and components. Huaqiangbei is the best-known component and gadget market; most serious manufacturing sits in the surrounding districts.
DongguanLarge contract-manufacturing base for chargers, cables, power banks and accessories, often supplying the brands sold out of Shenzhen.
GuangzhouWholesale and trading hub for accessories, with strong links to the Canton Fair for electronics and appliances.
YiwuBetter for low-cost small accessories and packaging than for tested, certified electronics.

What to check before you order

CheckWhy it matters for this category
BIS registrationA number of electronic products fall under mandatory registration, with the list changing over time. Check the current order for your exact item, whether it is a charger, adapter, headphone, power bank or something else.
WPC approvalBluetooth, Wi-Fi and other wireless devices generally need equipment type approval. It is one of the most commonly missed requirements for first-time importers.
Battery rulesLithium batteries are treated as dangerous goods for shipping, which affects which carriers and modes you can use, and what documents are needed. Confirm with the forwarder before booking.
Test reports and factory approvalSome registration routes require test reports or approval of the manufacturing facility. Ask the supplier early whether they already hold the relevant documents.
LabellingPackaging must carry the importer, MRP and other required declarations under Legal Metrology. See our compliance guide.
Always check the exact product

Applicability depends on what the specific item is and does, and the rules are revised from time to time. Treat this page as a map of what to look at, and confirm the current requirement for your product before you place an order.

Mistakes first-time importers make here

  • Buying first, certifying later. Production finishes, then someone asks about BIS, and the registration timeline becomes the delay.
  • Assuming "CE" or "FCC" marks are enough. These are other markets' marks and do not replace Indian requirements.
  • Sampling a different spec from production. Components in electronics are easy to substitute quietly. Approve a golden sample and inspect against it.
  • Ignoring warranty and returns. If the product fails, a defect rate you cannot claim against becomes your margin.
  • Under-estimating lithium shipping constraints, and discovering them at booking.

Classification, duty and landed cost

Electronics fall across many HS headings, so classification depends on exactly what the item is, how it works and what it is sold as. A phone charger, a Bluetooth speaker and a smartwatch are not the same line, and duty rates differ between them. Basic customs duty, the social welfare surcharge and IGST all feed into your landed cost, so model the whole stack and not just the freight.

A frequent error is working out margin from the factory price plus freight, then finding duty and certification costs take most of it. Do the full sum before you commit to a supplier.

Use our landed-cost calculator to model it, and the HS code reference as a starting point for classification. Neither replaces a customs professional's decision on your actual filing.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need BIS registration for every electronic product? +

No. BIS applicability is set product by product under Quality Control Orders, and the list is revised. Many common consumer electronics are covered; some are not. Check the exact product against the current list.

My earbuds are Bluetooth. Does that change anything? +

Yes. Any device that transmits on radio frequency generally needs WPC equipment type approval in addition to any BIS requirement.

Is Shenzhen or Yiwu better for electronics? +

For tested, certifiable electronics, Shenzhen and Dongguan. Yiwu suits cheap small accessories, and is a weaker place to find suppliers who can support Indian certification.

Can I ship power banks by sea? +

Lithium batteries are regulated dangerous goods and carriers apply specific rules by mode. Ask your forwarder for the current requirements before you agree the order.

Have a specific product in mind?

Send us the exact item, not the category. We will tell you honestly what certifications apply, what the landed cost looks like, and whether it is worth importing.
